Extensive Green Roofs: Different Time Approaches to Runoff Coefficient Determination

چکیده

Stormwater runoff in green roofs (GRs) is represented by the coefficient, which fundamental to assess their hydraulic performance and design drainage systems downstream. Runoff coefficient values newly installed GR should be estimated models that must feasible reproduce retention behavior as realistically possible, being thus adjusted each season climate region. In this study, suitability of a previously developed model for determination assessed using experimental data, registered over 1 year period. Results showed does not quite fit data obtained present was distinct with different conditions, revealing need develop new better adjustment, taking into consideration other variables besides temperature precipitation (e.g., early-stage moisture conditions matrix study area). were also determined time periods (monthly, weekly, per rain event) most adequate approach, considering practical uses coefficient. The monthly approach resulted lower (0–0.46) than weekly or event (0.017–0.764) determination. When applied long-term analysis, no significant differences when monthly, runoff, resulting on variation only 0.9 m3 annual runoff. This indicates use although suitable sizing systems, might used estimate performance. Overall, pilot extensive 0.4 m2 presented an volume 469.3 L, corresponding rate 89.6%, total 1089 mm. assessment scales major contribution future assessments, decision support tool.

Carbon sequestration potential of extensive green roofs.

Two studies were conducted with the objective of quantifying the carbon storage potential of extensive green roofs. The first was performed on eight roofs in Michigan and four roofs in Maryland, ranging from 1 to 6 years in age. All 12 green roofs were composed primarily of Sedum species, and substrate depths ranged from 2.5 to 12.7 cm. Aboveground plant material was harvested in the fall of 20...

A pilot study to evaluate runoff quantity from green roofs.

The use of green roofs is gaining increased recognition in many countries as a solution that can be used to improve environmental quality and reduce runoff quantity. To achieve these goals, pilot-scale green roof assemblies have been constructed and operated in an urban setting. From a stormwater management perspective, green roofs are 42.8-60.8% effective in reducing runoff for 200 mm soil dep...

lichens on extensive green roofs : evapotranspiration , Cladonia

Green roofs are constructed ecosystems that provide ecosystem services in urban environments. Shallow substrate green roofs subject the vegetation layer to desiccation and other environmental extremes, so researchers have evaluated a variety of stress-tolerant vegetation types for green roof applications. Lichens can be found in most terrestrial habitats. They are able to survive extremely har...

Performance evaluation of green roofs in urban runoff reduction

Urbanism directly affects the hydrological cycle. One of the ways to manage runoffs in urban areas that is considered nowadays is green roof creation. Green roof is mainly created in humid and semi-humid areas, and efficiency of green roofs in arid and semi-arid areas has attracted less attention. In the current study, to evaluate the effect of green roof in arid and semi-arid to reduce runoff,...

The Role of Extensive Green Roofs in Sustainable Development

As forests, agricultural fields, and suburban and urban lands are replaced with impervious surfaces resulting from development, the necessity to recover green space is becoming increasingly critical to maintain environmental quality. Vegetated or green roofs are one potential remedy for this problem. Establishing plant material on rooftops provides numerous ecological and economic benefits, inc...
